Coventry has a population of nearly half a million people and a significant problem with unwanted
and stray cats. We are Coventry Cat Group (CCG) a small, completely volunteer-led, no paid staff,
non-profit, non-destruct charity and we help manage the significant problem of feral and abandoned
cats in the area. A key impact of feral cat colonies is on the community they live in, apart from the
suffering to the animals themselves. A key focus of managing feral colonies is to trap and neuter the
cats keeping them initially in our feral pens at our centre prior to return or rehoming. We also promote education in cat welfare with a strong emphasis on the need to neuter pets.
We are alerted by members of the public via a helpline, or by other charities to cats needing our
help, whether a colony of feral or semi feral cats, or sick or abandoned animals, or those in a
situation which poses a threat to their welfare. A team of trained volunteers go out to trap ferals
and semi ferals in special ‘crush’ cages. They are then checked for microchips and brought to the
centre. They are then treated for health problems and neutered as required and returned to the
centre or one of our fosterers to recuperate and gradually undergo the lengthy process of
socialisation by teams of volunteers. As many as possible are rehomed to a domestic setting, or a
farm or working situation, or they may be returned to the area they were found, as long as there is
shelter and long term feeding in place. The charity has, to date, rehomed well over 1500 cats. Last
year we trapped from two colonies a total of over 30 cats and kittens, none were returned, all were
socialised, neutered, vaccinated and the majority are already in their forever homes.
Our centre is housed in beautiful gardens in a rural location, left to the charity in a will. It currently
comprises various units including feral pens, main pens and an isolation unit to manage infection,
plus a kitchen and office. We currently have around 50 volunteers to make up our teams of trappers,
fosterers and socialisers, those who take care of the cats on a daily basis, those who raise much
needed funds by organising our very popular events and raising awareness of what we do through
our website, social media and our annual newsletter.
The problem in the Coventry area is so great that we do not have sufficient space at our centre or
enough volunteers in our network of fosterers to help all the cats and kittens that need it.
We are therefore expanding to meet demand and have a comprehensive investment plan over the next three years to improve and expand our facilities. This includes expansion of our isolation unit, and replacement and
expansion of our oldest unit – the feral pens – both to help us deal with more of the neediest
animals. We are also intending to provide a dedicated mother and kitten unit.
